Life During NaNoWriMo: Music

by Kayla Trail

There is one week left of NaNoWriMo (or National Novel Writing Month). I’m a tad behind in my word count, with about twenty thousand words to write in the next week. So, instead of hunkering down and frantically writing up a storm, I’ve decided to blog about my experience of life during NaNoWriMo.

Part 1: Background Music

One of the first things I do before each November is put together a playlist of music to write to.  I have never been one who works well in silence and I always need a bit of background noise in order for my brain to work properly. Here’s a handy list of some of the music on my writing playlist this year. (A short aside, I have quite a few sea shanties on my list this year, as I am writing a young adult maritime adventure.  It’s been quite entertaining.)

Glosoli – Sigur Ros
Lukey – Great Big Sea
Elegy for Dunkirk – Dario Marianelli (from the Atonement Sountrack)
Lily’s Theme – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 Soundtrack
Am I Born to Die – performed by Tim Eriksen (Pretty much the entire Cold Mountain soundtrack is brilliant.)
Dead Hearts – Stars
Love Me or Leave Me – Nina Simone
The Riders of Rohan – Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings soundtrack)
Wildflowers – Blue Skies (A favorite youtuber of mine btw)
Freedom Blade – This Will Destroy You
Time Stops – Explosions in the Sky
Fairytale of New York – covered by Stars (It’s nice to get into the season towards the end of NaNo)

I’d love to hear what kind of music you like to listen to while your creative juices are flowing. I’m always on the lookout for new stuff to listen to. I am going to return to frantically pounding at my keyboard in hopes of catching up to  my 50k before the end of the month. Cheers!
